The HP ProLiant N40L MicroServer is a general purpose cost effective low powered small form factor server that is perfect for a variety of purposes. It is absolutely perfect for deploying a wide variety of home and business solutions that require dedicated hardware but don't require the power of a full blown expensive server.  The HP ProLiant N40L MicroServer is the newer version of the extremely popular HP ProLiant N36L MicroServer but with a better CPU (1.5GHz instead of 1.3GHz) and more RAM (2GB instead of 1GB). The HP ProLiant N40L MicroServer comes with an AMD Turion II NEO N40L 1.5GHz Dual Core CPU, can take up to 8GB RAM (2GB RAM installed), has 4 internal drive bays so you can put in up to 8TB of internal storage (250GB Installed) and supports RAID 1 (Mirror - For Fault Tolerance) and RAID 0 (Striping - For Improved Performance). This makes it great low cost alternative for deploying a variety of solutions, whether for yourself at home or in your business, or for your clients.

• NAS - To run your HP ProLiant MicroServer as a NAS just install FreeNAS and add up to 12TB Storage, either as individual drives or in a RAID configuration for improved performance and fault tolerance. If you find the on-board Gigabit network adapter is not providing sufficient throughput you can also add an additional Gigabit network adapter (with a low profile bracket) into the spare PCIe slot and if you want to further improve performance just add some more RAM. To add more than 8TB of storage you could also use the 7 USB 2.0 Ports (4 front + 2 back + 1 internal) and/or the eSata Port.
• Media Server - The HP ProLiant MicroServer is the perfect hardware for creating a MediaServer.  With the choice of Windows Home Server (~$100) or an open-source alternative like FreeNAS with some add-ons, the HP ProLiant MicroServer is certainly up for the task. You may need to do a bit of work to find and install the right add-ons, but with the MicroServer you will have the benefit of being able to use the hardware for something else later on if you choose to, an option generally not available with specially designed MediaServer hardware.
• Business Server - The HP ProLiant MicroServer has sufficient processor capacity and RAM upgradeability to happily run something like Microsoft Windows Small Busines Server Essentials 2011 for a small 5-10 seat deployment. With the benefit of fault tolerance provided by the on-board RAID 1, data security and fault resistance will also not be an issue. For additional network performance you can also easily add an additional Gigabit network adapter (low profile).
• Standalone Domain Controller - The HP ProLiant MicroServer makes a great standalone Domain Controller for those who need a simple two node DAS based Hyper-V cluster.
• Testing Server - The HP ProLiant MicroServer is perfect as a low cost testing server for any Linux (or Windows) system, whether you want to test the server installation or run it as an application server.
• Proxy/Firewall - The HP ProLiant MicroServer is absolutely perfect hardware for a dedicated firewall running on Endian, Untangle or any other alternative. Add either a Dual Port or a Quad Port Low Profile Gigabit Ethernet Card and you will have either 3 or 5 Gigabit network ports for use with your firewall. With a 3 port setup you can run your proxy/firewall as a load balancer/failover between 2 internet connections (G/R/R) or as a proxy/firewall with a DMZ (G/R/O). With 5 ports you can have a load balancer/failover between 2 internet connections as well as a DMZ and a dedicated Wi-Fi zone (G/R/R/O/B) to give you a complete high-end solution. Depending on the amount of traffic you may also want to add some additional RAM to give your proxy/firewall some more resources. For added fault-tolerance just set up your MicroServer with a RAID 1 by adding a second Hard Drive.
• PBX - The HP ProLiant MicroServer is the perfect hardware for a dedicated PBX based on any variant of Asterisk such as AsteriskNOW, Trixbox, Elastix, PBX In a Flash or any other distribution. For added fault-tolerance just set up your MicroServer with a RAID 1 by a second Hard Drive.
• Linux Server - The HP ProLiant MicroServer is perfect for a small Linux server, whether you want to use it in a production environment or just to play around.
• Zimbra Server - The HP ProLiant MicroServer is perfect for deploying the Zimbra Collaboration Suite, an open-source alternative to Microsoft Exchange and other propriatary messaging and collaboration solutions.
